Behavioural Disorder

A behavioural disorder is when the child/teen has a condition were their experience changes the way they think and feel. This usually ends up with challenging behaviours like, lying, cheating, stealing, temper tantrums and more. We understand that most children have some of these behaviours, and its apart of growing up. But if your child/teen has continuous challenging behaviours, then may be you could watch and write down when your child is having these challenging behaviours. Here is a little guideline for what you should look for and write down;

            • what are my child’s disruptive/challenging behaviours
            • when do these behaviours happen such as; time of day, week, month
            • where does it happen, school, home, sports, community
             who is around when your child/teen has their disruptive/challenging behaviour
             how bad was the disruptive/challenging behaviours
            have there been any major changes in your child’s life 

Once you have all your information, then you should go seek medical help, and it will only be your doctor that can diagnosis your child/teen. The information that you have written down and given a copy to your doctor will be of great help for you child/teen and any medical professional that is helping you.

There are three main types of behaviour disorders.

1) ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder)
2) CD (Conduct Disorder)
3) ADHD (Attention Defict Hyperactivity Disorder) please look under “Types of Diagnosis” for an explanation of ADHD

ODD (oppositional defiant disorder) is when a child/teen has a pattern of a negative and hostile attitude, which can be seen in more boys than girls at a 2 to 1 ratio. Plus when the child/teen’s behaviour or usual personality is disobedient, where they will not do anything that is told to them for at least 4 months, their behaviour may look like this:

             may have extreme and/or frequent temper tantrums or burst of anger
             they may be easily annoyed and angered
             they may take up an argument with any adult and/or authority figure
             they may be rude and confrontational 
             they will try to get others angry
             they may have low self-esteem
             they will blame others and not take responsibility for their actions
             they will refuse to follow any rules, especially at school and home

CD (conduct disorder) is when the child/teen has a repetitive and constant pattern of delinquent (not following the law) behaviour and unable to accept rules. These kids are usually labelled as “bad kids” and it is often seen in more boys than girls at a ratio of 4 to 1. CD kids generally disobey the personal rights of others, some of their common behaviour can be the following listed below;

             unable to obey adults and/or authority figures
            • will not go to/skip school, and has no excuse for not going to school
             they may be more likely to use druge, alcohol, including cigarette are a young age
             likely to destroy the property of others like cars, houses etc
            may be aggressive to other people and animals
            • may be bullies and threatens people
             get pleasure from seeing someone in pain or impose pain on others
             they are eager to start fights
             they are not understanding of others feelings
             may steal from people and shops
             stays out all night, even though you said no
             runs away from home

Research states that biological and environmental factors can contribute to the causes of behavioural disorders. There is not exact cause for the disorder, but many factors can add up to lead to behaviour problems like;

             violence in the child/teens’ home
             family is living in poverty or having trouble paying bills, having food, and having 
            a home
             the way the child/teen is being raised may be lacking by the parent(s)
             parent(s) with a substance/addiction problem(s)
            • they child/teen may have had a low birth weight
            
the child/teen may have been abandoned by the mother as a baby
             the child/teen may have been sexually and/or physically abused
             not having a stable home, always being moved from foster home to foster home

If your child/teen has a behaviour disorder, then the best thing you can do for them is to be patient and encourage their good behaviour. Some treatment that may be helpful to you as a parent and your child would be;

            
family therapy
             anger management for your child/teen
             parent training

It is important for a professional to diagnosis your child, if the have a behaviour problem. Now if your child has a diagnosed behaviour problem, it may be helpful to have a professional like;

 

             family doctor
            paediatrician
            child psychologist
            therapist
             social worker
            community worker

 

 

 

Please have a professional diagnosis your child/teen if you think your child/teen may have a behaviour problem. Also remember to keep track of your child/teen’s behaviour for at least 4 to 6 months, so you have proof of your concerns.
